Dr. Seok Won Hong Elected Next KSOE (formerly KCORE) President
Cupertino, California, November 4, 2005 At the annual fall meeting of the Korea Society of Ocean Engineers (KSOE), Dr. Seok Won Hong was elected the president for the term of January 1, 2006 – December 31, 2007. KSOE with its headquarters in Busan is formerly Korea Committee for Ocean Resources and Engineering (KCORE) which co-founded ISOPE, 1989, and hosted the first PACOMS-90 Symposium, June 1990. Dr. Hong joined KRISO in 1979, and was appointed June 2005 director general of Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI), Daejeon, Korea. MOERI is formerly the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). MOERI is active in research and development at its modern facilities of sea-keeping tank, cavitation tunnel, towing tank and deep-ocean development.
Dr. Hong is a charter member of ISOPE and hosted the ISOPE PACOMS-2002 Daejeon. He was the local secretariat of the ISOPE-2005 Seoul. He and his group have been active in organizing technical sessions at the annual ISOPE Conferences and the Pacific-Asia Offshore Mechanics Symposium (PACOMS). He earned BS degree in naval architecture from Seoul National University, 1977, and PhD degree in applied mechanics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1988. MOERI has the largest number of ISOPE members in Korea. Dr. Hong received the ISOPE PACOMS Award, 2002, ISOPE Award, 2005, Honored Graduate Student Fellowship, University of Michigan, First Grade Prize for Best Research Work in KRISO, 1994 and Prime Minister’s Award of Korea, 1995.
