ISOPE PACOMS-2004 Was the Largest International

Scientific Meeting Held in Vladivostok

 

The 6th ISOPE Pacific/Asia Offshore Mechanics Symposium ¾ISOPE PACOMS-2004 was held successfully at Hyundai Hotel, Vladivostok, Russia, September 12-16, 2004. It was the largest international scientific symposium, since the city was open to the world 13 years ago.

 

The theme was Ocean Engineering and Ice Engineering, Development of the Continental Offshore, and Sakhalin Oil&Gas Projects. Total number of symposium participants was 190, including 61 foreign participants. The Symposium proceedings included 48 peer-reviewed papers: 20 authored by non-Russians and 28 by Russians. The peer review includes at least one review conducted outside the authorsf countries. In addition, there were 12 oral presentations and 5 poster presentations. The PACOMS committee received 120 abstracts and scheduled 76 abstracts for peer review.

 

The Opening Session (photo) on Monday was attended by 190 participants with lively discussions, aided by the simultaneous translation. The following 11 sessions were also very well attended. Russian and foreign researchers and engineers had a rare opportunity of discussing problems of technical progress of mutual interest and international cooperation in the fields of scientific investigations and practice at a higher international level, as well as industrial-economic projects directed to further development of resources in the worldfs ocean, and Sakhalin and Siberia in particular.

 

FESTU Reception (photo), the first-class reception was hosted by the president of Far-Eastern State Technical University (FESTU) in a warm environment at Diamond room, Sunday, September 12. Group Dinner at cottage Zaimka (photo) on Tuesday was very nice Russian dinner perfect for a good fellowship get-together. Most foreign participants were anxious before the dinner to learn the Russian menu, but really enjoyed the dinner and the friendship. This cottage outside Vladivostok is the restaurant where Russian party secretary, Brezhnev and the U.S. president Ford met.

PACOMS Banquet (photo) was held with an interpreterfs help, and programmed partly in Russian tradition, but with a fewer toasts: Norway Ambassador to Russia, Vice governor of Primorye Territory, Vice Mayor of Vladivostok, Sakhalin Energy Investment Co. managers, Aker-Kvaerner president, the local host (Bekker), ISOPE (Chung). On behalf of ISOPE president, Jin Chung presented ISOPE PACOMS Award to Prof. Bekker of FESTU. The Vladivostok chamber of the arts performed popular folk songs of the Russian and participantsf countries.

 

The technical sessions were followed by a symposium field tour to Vostochny Port. A special dry dock serves as a construction site (photo) for 2 Sakhalin II Concrete Gravity Base Structures (CGBS)Piltun-B (PA-B) and Lunskaya-A (Lun-A) for Sakhalin Offshore. The excursion was sponsored by Norwegian-Finnish consortium headed by AkerKvaerner.
