Symposium on High-Performance Materials in Offshore Industry (HMOI)

Honolulu, Hawaii, May 29, 2003 This year, a special symposium was organized by ExxonMobil as part of ISOPE-2003. It highlighted emerging materials technologies for oil and gas production and transportation, which were presented by the leading researchers from around the world, representing ExxonMobil, Nippon Steel, Europipe, POSCO, Sumitomo Metals, and JFE Holdings (Kawasaki and NKK). A special session was devoted to the new development of High- Strength Pipeline Technology, focusing on the science and technology of the recently developed X-100 and X-120 high-strength steels for line pipe.

Presented were pipeline design and large component and full-scale testing, including ring expansion, burst and crack arrest tests. The economics of high-strength pipelines were also discussed.  The symposium provided a major forum for the advancement of the high-strength pipeline technology by bringing together representatives from the world’s major steel companies, oil and gas industries, welding institutes and regulatory bodies.
