| Total number of sessions at this moment is 97.
We will have to make it to 91 sessions, the capacity of the venue. ISOPE-2002 Kyushu is
again the world¡¯s largest conference of its kind with refereed papers in 2002, being
almost the same in the number of sessions and abstracts as for ISOPE-2001 Stavanger. Hotel Room Rates. Single room rate at our 4-star venue hotel is arranged as 9,500 Yen (less than 80 US dollar). The full advance conference registration fee starts from USD550 (ISOPE Member authors), the same as for ISOPE-2001 . The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE) encourages college graduate students and entering new graduate students to study and/or to conduct research in any fields in Offshore Mechanics and Polar Engineering, or to participate in the annual ISOPE Conferences. For this purpose, ISOPE will award scholarships of $500 each for the academic year 1999-2000. Five scholarships were granted to outstanding graduate students for 2001-2002. The recipients are encouraged to join the ISOPE student membership. To apply, send the following information to the Awards Committee: (1) An official graduate school transcript for current graduate students and official undergraduate transcript for entering graduate students; (2) A letter of recommendation from the thesis supervising faculty, department chairperson, or an ISOPE member on your campus, and (3) An application form. | ISOPE-2001 Stavanger Conference Almost Set Another Attendance Record | |||||||||
ISOPE-99 Brest broke the previous attendance record of ISOPE-97 Honolulu Conference. ISOPE-2001 Stavanger, the Eleventh (2001) Annual International Offshore and Polar Engineering Conference, was held at Clarion Hotel Stavanger, Norway, June 17¨C22. Its conference proceedings printed more refereed papers than for ISOPE-99 Brest. The Technical Program Committee (TPC) featured 91 technical and opening sessions and 6 plenary sessions. Top experts from the industry, academia and government made 450 refereed papers and 16 oral presentations, which were followed by discussions by researchers, engineers and managers. The ISOPE-2001 program was again the world¡¯s largest technical program of its kind with refereed papers. The papers were selected from more than 680 abstracts received from 49 countries. The conference proceedings (3,039 pages in 4 volumes) ¨C hard copy and CD-ROM - are available from ISOPE after the Conference. Advance registration fee was $550 for the authors, that included the entire proceedings set (hard copy and CD-ROM), reception, banquet and daily tea breaks. The price for the entire 4-volume set (hard copy and CD-ROM) is US$430 (ISOPE Member $350). The fee for the ISOPE-2002, the 12th anniversary, is expected to remain at the same level, and the special ISOPE room rate at two 4-star hotels starts from 9,500 Yen (?/font> US$80). On behalf of the International Symposium Organizing Committee (SOC) of the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE), Local Symposium Organizing Committee (LOC), and cooperating societies and hosting organization KRISO, we would like to invite your abstract for possible presentation at The 5th(2002) ISOPE Pacific/Asia Offshore Mechanics Symposium (ISOPE PACOMS-2002), Daejon, Korea, November 17-20, 2002. Four previous symposiums were successfully held: PACOMS-90 Seoul, Korea, PACOMS-92 San Francisco, USA, PACOMS-94 Beijing, China, and PACOMS-96 at Pusan, Korea. Two and half a day technical sessions with participation from more than 10 countries are being organized with emphasis on recent developments of control technologies in ocean engineering fields. | Prof. Wataru Koterayama, an ISOPE Charter
Member and Journal Editor, was appointed in March 2001 Director, Research Institute for
Applied Mechanics (RIAM), Kyushu University, Kasuga, Japan. The term of his appointment is
from April 1, 2001 to March 31, 2003. The main research focus of RIAM has been on
fundamental mechanics, ocean and atmosphere dynamics, plasma and material science, and

| Dr. Yong Bai, an ISOPE Member, joined American
Bureau of Shipping as Manager of Offshore Technology in Corporate Technology Group. He is
leading and participating in various ABS projects to develop offshore classification
guides and guidance notes. From 1996 to early 2000, He had been professor of offshore
structures at Stavanger University College and Manager of Advanced Engineering in Pipeline
and Riser Section of ABB Offshore Systems, Norway. Since 1990, Dr. Bai has actively
